The article investigates the blood-relations between notable Prussian scribes, clergy and merchants, and demonstrates the importance of women in the shaping of family relations in late medieval Prussia. Individuals analyzed in the study include two scribes, Bernhard and Peter Strik, their brother Paul, parish priest of Thiergart, and Nikolaus Holland, cathedral provost of Marienverder as well as the public notary and future diplomat in service of the Teutonic Grand Masters, Peter of Wormditt and his kinship relations to various citizens of Elbling, Danzig and Konigsberg. The combination of priesthood with the role of a public notary was a popular practice ensuring personal career in the Prussian society in the 15th century. The evidence suggests that the network of Prussian scribes contributed to the formation of a kind of scribe-region with the vernacular ostmitteldeutsch as community language. The article investigates the blood-relations between notable Prussian scribes, clergy and merchants, and demonstrates the importance of women in the shaping of family relations in late medieval Prussia. Today, digitization projects in the Humanities require the implementation of larger, supraregional solutions. The contributions in this volume were presented at the conference of the Hamburg State Archives and the Center for the Humanities in the Digital World at the University of Hamburg on April 10 and 11, 2006. They make an interdisciplinary contribution to the required standardisation of corresponding services which can only facilitate the urgently needed exchange of information and make it possible to share structured data

Determination of nutrient salts by automatic methods both in seawater and brackish water: the phosphate blank

    Get PDF
9 páginas, 2 tablas, 2 figurasThe main inconvenience in determining nutrients in seawater by automatic methods is simply solved: the preparation of a suitable blank which corrects the effect of the refractive index change on the recorded signal. Two procedures are proposed, one physical (a simple equation to estimate the effect) and the other chemical (removal of the dissolved phosphorus with ferric hydroxide).Support for this work came from CICYT (MAR88-0245 project) and Conselleria de Pesca de la Xunta de GaliciaPeer reviewe

Aspects of the new ordinance concerning the chanceery in the monastic Teutonic State in Prussia after the Second Peace of Toruń

After the outbreak of the Thirteen Years‘ War there was created a certain kind of the Pomesan chancellery landscape. Its creation resulted from the tendency of various chancelleries to cooperate. The central point of the landscape was Marienburg’s [Polish: Malbork] chancellery of the Grand Master under the supervision of the clergyman and chancellor Andreas Santberg. He organized the manner of administering the written documentation with the help of public notaries, who had prepared the earliest files. The personal relations between the city chancelleries of the Monastic State and the Teutonic chancelleries may be noticed. The situation of the work of the chancellery during the Thirteen Years’ War was determined by extraordinary conditions. Preparing the registers of documents in the chancellery of the Grand Master was stopped. Instead of this, the number of drafts of documents increased. In the cities and towns which were most affected by the war events, it was hard to maintain the continuity in the production of documents. After the Grand Master moved to Königsberg, the preparations to set up a new registry office of the territorial ruler commenced. The chancellery’s personnel organized the administration of the documentations according to old models of the Sambian chancellery. One of the characteristic features of the German writing used during the war was the introduction of double sounds „nn” in the initial syllable and sometimes in the final syllable. After the conclusion of the Peace Treaty the process of the gradual secularization of the Grand Master’s chancellery could be observed. In the times of Friedrich von Sachsen educated lawyers were responsible for chancelleries following the models taken over from the Meissen motherland of the Grand Master. Under the rule of the margrave Albrecht people from Francophonie became trustworthy cooperators. They led to the gradual francisation of the language of the chancellery. Writing registers again became part of chancellery production. A new administration was created. Similar phenomena took place in case of writing production of the city chancelleries and other lay and church chancelleries at the end of the Teutonic period, which requires further research

Prussian national awareness in certification features of public notaries of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century   The signs of Prussian notaries presented in this article fit into the framework of the German type of notary signs, although peculiarities can be recognized that relate to Prussia or to parts of this country. However, examples of this could only be found in small numbers, since the majority of the notarial signs handed down lack any reference to the country. Examples from the years 1417 and 1429 show that public notaries maintained Prussian national awareness even after the great defeat of the Teutonic Order near Tannenberg in 1410.Prussian national awareness in certification features of public notaries of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century   The signs of Prussian notaries presented in this article fit into the framework of the German type of notary signs, although peculiarities can be recognized that relate to Prussia or to parts of this country.
